Jiangsu's foreign trade up 5.6% in January

Jiangsu's foreign trade in January rose 5.6 percent year on year to 370.65 billion yuan, with the exports of 222.54 billion yuan and imports 148.11 billion yuan, up 8.7 percent and 1.3 percent respectively, according to data released by Nanjing Customs on February 18.

Exports and imports of products under the general trade category surged 11.1 percent to 187.88 billion yuan, accounting for 50.7 percent of the total foreign trade, 2.1 percentage points higher than the same period of last year.

Jiangsu saw more foreign trade with countries and regions along the “Belt and Road” Initiative. In January, the province’s foreign trade with Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines reached 10.13 billion yuan, 9.8 billion yuan, 8.68 billion yuan and 4.65 billion yuan, up 48.8 percent, 23.6 percent, 24.5 percent and 23 percent, respectively.

Imports and exports with emerging markets of Latin America and Africa maintained momentum of increase, with the growth rate in last year high as 34.2 percent and 21.5 percent, respectively.

Private enterprises played more important roles in the province’s foreign trade. In January, private enterprises realized imports and exports of 110.74 billion yuan, an increase of 14.4 percent, while imports and exports increased by 10.6 percent and 16.1 percent respectively.
