Charles Roderick Curwen: Jiangsu is my spiritual home

It has been 32 years since Charles Roderick Curwen made his first visit to Jiangsu Province. As ADC to the former Governor of Victoria Sir Rohan Delacombe and an “honorary citizen” of Jiangsu, he can’t remember how many times he has travelled to the eastern China’s coastal province.

Born in Cumberland, England and educated at Harrow, he was deployed to Australia as a Captain. Later he became an Australian citizen and remained at Government House.

Curwen arrived in Jiangsu for the first time in 1986, when the then Governor of Victoria started the first overseas visit. The Australian delegation’s first stop was Suzhou, and they were invited to a celebration ceremony to mark the 2,500th founding anniversary of the city.

Deeply impressed by Suzhou’s long history, Mr. Curwen said he received a special gift at the celebration - a small replica of the sword used by Fuchai, the last king of the state of Wu during the Spring and Autumn Period (approximately 771 to 476 BC). Curwen has always kept this gift as a treasure and uses it as a letter opener, which certainly links two different life styles – ancient Chinese and modern Western.

Jiangsu and Victoria established sister-state relationship in 1979 and started exchanges and cooperation in various fields. China's reform and opening up as well as the friendly exchanges between two regions have brought unique opportunities to understand China's long history and splendid culture, said Curwen.

Since the establishment of friendly relationship, Jiangsu and Victoria have expanded their cooperation to cover fields of economy, science and technology, agriculture, culture, education and health, and made numerous achievements.

With strong interest in medical research, Curwen has paid special attention to the medical development in Jiangsu while cooperation between two sides has flourished.

Data shows that as of September 2016, more than 600 medical professionals from Jiangsu had studied in Australia, and over 350 medical and health management personnel from Victoria also had visited Jiangsu. Jiangsu had 13 hospitals that have entered friendly exchanges with their counterparts in Victoria. Editor:Amanda
